An Asking Price Is Not a Value Guide

Active listings can be useful image references while remaining poor evidence of completed market value.

Active listings can be useful image references while remaining poor evidence of completed market value.

Begin with the object

Record dimensions, materials, fronts, backs, edges, marks, construction, condition, and provenance before interpreting imagery or comparing price.

Separate evidence from assumptions

A seller’s date, rarity claim, famous brand, or old-looking surface is a research lead rather than a conclusion. Build the description from manufacturing and documentary evidence.

Preserve context

Addresses, dealer stamps, printer lines, handwritten notes, groupings, frames, packages, and family histories may carry more research value than a cleaner display surface.

Use comparisons carefully

Compare objects with the same format, issue, dimensions, completeness, originality, condition, and geographic context. Active asking prices are useful for discovering examples, not proving market value.

Compare current collector listings

Use listings to study dimensions, backs, printer marks, construction, restoration, local imprints, and market supply. Asking prices are not completed-sale evidence.
